11 Best Habits of the Happiest People

A few years ago I had a job working at a call center. And I’ll be honest with you, the job sucked. It was long hours of talking to people trying fix their phones and computers while having to deal with whatever emotional state they were in. There was yelling, crying, sarcasm, the whole shebang. But in spite of all of the stress and annoyance there was one man named Ed who I will always remember.


Because he was so freaking happy. All the time. Ed would come into work smiling and saying hey to everyone. Sometimes he was so happy and charismatic that my coworkers and I became skeptical. Like who is really that happy? But at the same time while being skeptical, we loved it. His happiness was contagious. The job still sucked but he made it a little more bearable and we always noticed his absence. And one day I asked him about how he managed to be so positive and his response was, “Because I don’t have to work, I get to work. And I get to make people smile every day.”

In a way he inspired me. Seeing him be so positive made me have one of those “If he can do it, I can do it,” moments. I’m generally a care free person, but from then on I always made it a point not only be care free, but to surround myself with people like him and create that same happiness within myself.  And over the years I’ve picked up the best habits that a lot “happy people” like Ed have that allows them to be the way that they are. Try adding some of these to your lifestyle and see how much of a difference they can make.

Habits of Happy People

  1. Making the best of everything. No matter how crappy the situation seems to be having the attitude of “It could be worse,” and then finding the silver lining of the situation makes you have a completely different outlook.
  2. Practicing self care. Even the happiest people that I’ve see that love to give (and most of them do) always make sure their cup is full too.
  3. Taking breaks from technology and social media. It’s so much easier to find your happy place when you don’t have a ton of distractions.
  4. Letting go of trivial problems. Don’t let a mean comment or spilled coffee ruin your day. Happy people are able to roll with the punches and let go of trivial matters to continue on with their day. It sounds easy until you try it.
  5. Practicing gratitude. Humans have a hard time being satisfied, we always want something more or different. And while there’s nothing wrong with that it’s important to be grateful for what you do have.
  6. Meditating regularly. Whether it’s every day or every week meditation increases your positive vibrations with the universe and allows you to clear your mind and relieve stress. Meditating with essential oils combined with affirmations it can help you get closer to the life that you want to live.
  7. Living a healthy lifestyle. Food and exercise can have major effects on your happiness. Having a healthy diet will give you more energy to get through the day and exercise releases endorphins that make you feel happier.
  8. Finding a way for creative expression. The happiest people I know always have some type of hobby that they love. It could be a sport, music, art, etc. but it’s usually something that they’re passionate about.
  9. Happy people stay away from negativity. Just like happiness is contagious negativity is contagious. So surrounding yourself with positive energy keeps you in your happy place. And it makes it easier to spread the love.
  10. Having goals. A lot of people have goals but the difference between the goals most people have and the goals happy people have is that they’re attainable and can truly be worked towards. Having goals but never being able to reach them is just going to lead to a lot of disappointment.
  11. Living in the moment. The best habit that the happiest people have is taking each day in stride and living in the moment because tomorrow is never promised.
