4 Easy Ways to Live Healthy on a Budget

It seems like these last couple of years we’ve all been moving towards living healthier lifestyles. More and more people are becoming conscious of what they’re eating. Making changes such as becoming vegetarian or vegan.

And even more people are getting into fitness. Especially women. It’s a fitness renaissance if you will. We are making some serious lifestyle changes and I think it’s great. It’s good that we’re starting to take care of ourselves and do our own research instead of just taking someone’s word for what is healthy for our bodies.

But with so much information out there trying to tell you which diet to follow, which workouts to do, and which products to use, it can be overwhelming. Where do you start? What’s best for you? And which workouts and meal plans won’t cost you an arm and a leg?

I don’t know about you but I prefer to ease my way into lifestyle changes. Being able to slowly change a few things here and there can be much more sustainable and affordable than dropping everything I’m doing and starting over.

And seeing as I’m constantly trying to make healthy living easier (and cheaper) for myself, I thought it would be great to share my best tips to make healthy living on a budget easier for you as well.

Spend More Time Grocery Shopping

This is something that I sometimes struggle with because I have my lazy days. But I can’t deny that when I’m too lazy to grocery shop I end up paying for it in the long run.

Fast food and restaurants, regardless of how “healthy” the food may be, cost way too much money compared to buying groceries and cooking food at home. The same $5 you spend for one meal going out, you can spend to make multiple meals.

Once a week, every two weeks, or once a month make a grocery list that fits into your budget. Make sure that you stay away from putting junk food on the list. And then, most importantly, make sure that when you go to the grocery store that you actually go for just the things you wrote down.

This is going to save you money over time and it keeps you from buying unhealthy food in the process. And if you don’t have the junk food at home, you can’t eat it.

Meal Prep for the Week

Meal prepping seems time consuming but it’s actually the opposite. Especially once you get the hang of things. Even though it might take up a few hours one day. It’ll save you time throughout the rest of the week.

On top of saving time, meal prepping saves you from doing spur of the moment spending on food. There have been plenty of times I thought about going to get some fast food for lunch, but I knew I already meal prepped and I didn’t want that food to go to waste. And that was enough to keep me from buying it.

Meal prepping doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. And you have plenty of options. You could make taco bowls for lunch and spaghetti for dinner for the week. Bake some some chicken and addin some broccoli and rice. And if you want to meal prep your breakfasts as well you can make oatmeal muffins and store all of the food in your fridge to access later.

Feelin snack-y? In between your meal preps, make sure to have some fruit, granola bars, or yogurt handy.

Get a Cheap Gym Membership

Here’s the thing. You don’t need all of the bells and whistles and fancy amenities that a lot of these overpriced gyms offer. All you need are the basics and it will get the job done. You”ll just want to get creative with your workouts so that you have some variety.

For example, if your gym doesn’t have any fancy machines and all it has are dumbbells then learn how to substitute the machine exercises with dumbbells. There’s always a way to substitute or modify an exercise to work the same muscles.

If you’re looking for a cheap gym membership Planet Fitness offers memberships for only $10 a month, and they’re almost everywhere. I’ve worked out there for years and I’ve never had an issue with the equipment that they have.

Workout At Home or Outside

If you just can’t afford to make it to the gym, you can always do workouts at home. Slowly collecting workout equipment to put together a mini home gym is going to save you money in the long run.

I personally really like at home workouts because I don’t have to waste gas driving to and from the gym. I can take a shower right after my workout, eat a nice meal, and relax without having to leave the house.

Although it might not be popular to say, workouts at home can be challenging too. You can get some resistance bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, and a yoga mat and go to work. If you’re not sure where to start, you can always try my 3o-day At Home Workout Challenge. It’s 30 day of 30 minute workouts. Best of all there’s no equipment needed.

Because you don’t need a gym or gym equipment to start seeing results. Living healthy on a budget is easy, it just takes a little creativity.
