8 Ways To Declutter and Refresh Your Life + Blog Updates

In times like these, with #stayhome and #alonetogether, we have to find ways to maintain our sanity and a sense of normalcy.

For me personally, I took this as a time to refocus and clean up my life. This included peeling back the layers of my social presence, removing things from my life that no longer served me, and learning what really mattered to me and how to preserve it.

What ended up happening was this:

  • I took the longest break from social media that I ever had before (in retrospect it was only a month or so but that’s a lot to me). This led to me removing all of my posts from my Instagram to start fresh with a new perspective.
  • I did some spring cleaning and donated 80% of my wardrobe. I’ve been looking forward to investing in more quality clothing that will last a long time and fit with my growing style.
  • I read, journaled, and actually did yoga. All things I’ve been saying I want to do more of but not having enough time to do it.
  • I’ve spent more time with my family, and even celebrated my 26th birthday with my brother. Something we haven’t done since we were children.
  • I’ve gotten engaged! Relationships are a part of my life that I try to keep personal and sacred so I don’t talk much about my love on the blog but I’m super excited to share this news.
  • And lastly I’ve slowly transitioned and did a cleaning of this blog as well. Finding Uphoria has grown into a strong community and I’ve grown with it as well. My interests have changed, and even though I will always enjoy fitness, it’s no longer my absolute focus. Overall wellness is what’s important to me. So I will be keeping all of my old posts but changing the direction of the blog to grow with me and my love for improving well-being. I hope that you stick around and grow with me as well!

I’m so happy for this new chapter! With all of these changes I feel much freer and in a more clear head space. And to be honest I think a decluttering and cleaning of my life is something I’ve needed for a while. It’s also something I’m going to continue to do at least once or twice a year.

Re-evaluating where you are in your life is a great way to make sure that you’re still following a path that you love and that you’re taking care of yourself in the best way that you can. And I really want to encourage you to do the same thing as well. Take time to refocus. Refresh. Declutter. And simplify.

Here are some ideas on how to declutter and refresh your life.

8 Ways to Declutter and Refresh Your Life

Create a List of Priorities.

When cleaning up whether it be your life or your home it’s easy to get distracted by the little things and not the big picture or what’s most important. Try creating a list of 5 – 10 areas that you would like to clean, refresh, or declutter in your life.

For me this was social media, my personal relationships, the blog, my closet, my finances, and my hobbies. But that doesn’t mean your list can’t be strictly home related or family related. Choose what matters most to you.

Because creating a list and organizing your thoughts gives you a clear place to start. From there you can decide in what order you want to start.

Get rid of unused or no longer used items.

Don’t be a hoarder waiting for the day that you might wear that outfit or that you might use that bike again. Make an effort to get rid of these things, or even better, give them to someone who will actually make use of them. If you have old clothes that no longer fit or aren’t your style anymore, donate them. Appliances that you no longer use? Re-purpose them or get rid of them.

Of course, if it’s something that you KNOW that you use even though it’s sparingly, don’t get rid of it. You’ll just end up unnecessarily spending money later to buy a new one. So use good judgement. But remember, holding on to items you no longer need just takes up space and creates clutter.

Limit your social media.

You don’t have to remove it all like I did, unless you want to. But it is a good idea to create a healthier environment around social media if you’re going to continue using it. Clean up the list of people you’re following.

Remove all of the profiles that make you feel insecure or envious. Or that hold no purpose in your life. Follow only accounts that inspire you. Accounts that make you want to do better and feel better. Even accounts that make you have constrictive thoughts or criticism about the world you live in.

And just because you’re interested in fitness that doesn’t mean you have to follow every fitness account. Just like you don’t have to follow every food blogger just because you like to cook.

Pick a small group of people that you really identify with and follow them. This will drastically lower the amount of people you follow and the amount of time that you spend on social media that you can be using to do other things.

Design a morning routine.

The way you start your morning can set the tone for the rest of your day. Put together a routine for yourself that includes some me time. Have a quiet breakfast. Walk your dog. Spend a few minutes writing. Do some yoga. Find time for yourself in the morning to start your day with a calm and clear mind.

Redecorate your living space.

Now this should be the most obvious thing you can do to declutter, but in case you forgot about it, here it is. Moving around furniture, cleaning up your home, and allowing more space and light to come in are all ways to refresh your living space. It can also boost your mood and put you in a more positive mindset. A clean home is a happy home.

Plan your meals.

If you don’t like to meal prep that’s understandable. but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with organizing your meals. Planning your meals for the week or more, especially with family, is a great way to make sure you have everything you need to cook or eat and nothing you don’t. Try not to panic buy or impulse buy. Especially when it comes to perishables.

Instead, try buying staple foods in bulk so that you can properly plan your meals while saving time and money.

Explore old and new hobbies.

Take a step back from the electronics and explore some hobbies and activities that you’ve left behind. Or even better, try out some new activities. Read a book. Do some exercises. Complete a puzzle. Play cards or a board game. Learn a new instrument. The list of things to do is endless.

Getting away from the technology allows you to live in the moment and find a new way to get that rush of energy and excitement.

Spend time with your spiritual self.

Decluttering your life isn’t always about the physical. Finding time to be alone or out in nature and be at peace is a good way to clean your mind and spiritual energy. Meditation is a powerful way to do this as well. Spend 15 – 20 minutes alone a few time a week to clear your thoughts. Just focus on your breathing and the sensations of your body and without distractions of you immediate surroundings. Try it and see how much better you feel.
